It has always been difficult to find a theoretical model that is a good match for Sei-ki, or for Shiatsu. Masunaga made this attempt, introducing Kanpo and Chinese medical theory to Shiatsu. But it was an incomplete and unsatisfactory project and he died before he could finish it. To date, no one has offered a comprehensive theoretical model for Sei-ki becaue it was thought the work spoke for itself. But in fact, we need some theory through wich to understand, develop and explain the work.

Clearing is a solid alternative to Masunaga’s model and is better suited to the modern world. It is a return, in some ways, to his earlier experiments with psychology, though Clearing is based on a different idea of the psyche from that of psychology. It offers a path through which the practitioner can develop personally, which is essential to stop counter-transference and ‘see’ people’s situations more clearly; it offers solid training in ethics and how to deal with clients professionally; it is a coherent alternative to the medical model and gives us a way to talk about health, the client’s journey and the body’s relationship to mind and emotions which does not force it into a medical box.

Clearing helps us say what is true for us and show up more authentically in the world. At a time when the Art of Touch, be it Sei-ki or Shiatsu, is increasingly in danger of vanishing, as people are lost in virtual worlds and fears about close contact and intimacy, it is vital to improve our understanding about what we do and be able to talk about our work and its extraordinary power and humanity.
